Duties and Responsibilities:

This position is similar to our Section Grower 1 position, but involves more supervisory, and less hands-on, involvement with maintenance, watering, etc., and greater responsibility for what happens and needs to happen with the crops.

  • Be knowledgable about plant inventory and how inventory will be used.
  • Ensure that all processes and protocols are followed to keep inventory on track for growth and sales.
  • Oversee management of all irrigation and growing operations of liners grown in a designated section of greenhouses.
  • Assist in development, management and implementation of IPM Program. Manage and implement sanitation protocols, cultural protocol, and general growing protocols and provide recommendations for pesticide and biological use.
  • Apply pesticides, chemicals and biologicals as required for maintaining crop health. 
  • Maintain a valid North Carolina Pesticide License.
  • Direct and assist in the planning for other greenhouse workers ensuring timely completion of work.
  • Ensure houses are monitored daily for water management, cultural issues, weeds, fertilization, organization, insect and disease issues, sanitation, and overall plant growth, health and appearance.
  • Assist and oversee minor greenhouse repairs and winterizing of greenhouse structures.
  • Manage and plan space allocation for new plants scheduled from production.
  • Work closely with production staff for successful transition of new plants/production into houses.
  • Continually study new equipment, tehnologies, processes, and deas to reduce waste and improve efficiency.
  • Train growing department staff in your area to perform efficiently and effectively, and to company standards.
  • Manage crops to ensure quality plants are organized and ready to ship. 
  • Ensure growing records are maintained that include specifics about plant growth, EC readings, fertilization, pest problems and any treatment.
  • Communicate frequently with Head Grower about priorities, solving problems, and labor management.
  • Be in alignment with Hoffman Nursery’s core values.
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Degree in horticulture or related field
  • 3-5 years nursery experience
  • Supervisory skills preferred
  • Demonstrated initiative and self-direction
  • Demonstrated team skills
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying conditions
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs.
  • Strong attention to detail and safety
  • Alignment with Hoffman Nursery core values.

This is a full-time hourly position averaging 42-45 hours per week.
