Purpose: In keeping with our Core Purpose to promote better living through plants, the purpose of this position is to provide support for the Growing Department, focusing on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and overall plant health

Duties and Responsibilities:
IPM program and chemical application

  • Assist in further development, management and implementation of the HNI Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program.
  • Assist in training HNI employees in the implementation of the HNI IPM Program.
  • Assist Chief Operations Officer and Head Grower in complying with all aspects of the Worker Protection Standard, pesticide regulations, chemical handling and disposal, and required recordkeeping.
  • Assist in training new employees in compliance with the Worker Protection Standard.
  • Communicate with all managers or supervisors to develop a schedule for timely chemical and pesticide applications, create application spray sheets and disperse to nursery staff at appropriate times.
  • Investigate new IPM methods and research new and more effective control measures, and recommend controls that minimize chemical use.
  • Purchase and stock all necessary chemicals, reducing costs where possible. Keep a current chemical inventory log.
  • Ensure all chemical application equipment receives routine service and maintenance,and equipment is operating safely and efficiently.
  • Send samples of plant material to laboratory for analysis and keep log of all samples sent. 
  • Assist Growing Team in determining the most effective control measures for treating diseases and infestations.
  • Follow all Hoffman Nursery, Inc. policies and assist with the implementation of these policies.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including summer heat.
  • Be in alignment with Hoffman Nursery core values.
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

Growing Support

  • Communicate daily with Growing team to keep abreast of plant issues and determine the best solutions to problems.
  • Assist growers with assessing plant issues through EC readings, pH readings and other methods as well as media and water monitoring.
  • Maintain chemical and growing supplies inventories. 
  • Provide general support to the Growing Department through research and documentation.

Required Qualifications

  • Degree in horticulture or related field; 
  • 1-3 years of nursery or related experience; 
  • NC pesticide license or ability to get one; 
  • Strong organizational skills; 
  • Time management skills; 
  • Drive, determination and a self-disciplined approach to achieving results
  • Demonstrated collaboration and team skills; 
  • Good interpersonal skills; 
  • Thrive in fast-paced environment;
  • Effective communication skills; and 
  • Strong attention to detail and safety.

This is a full-time hourly position averaging 40 - 45 hours per week, including after hours on weekdays, weekend duty, and holidays.
